Take time to get to know your colleagues
When you're a manager, you need to get to know the people that you're going to be looking after. By getting to know them through things such as team building events or even just speaking to them in the office, you'll know how they work and what can help to motivate them. They will appreciate that you're taking the time and effort to get to know them and are likely to work harder as a result.
Be someone to rely on but don’t let the lines get blurred
This can be a tricky part when you are a manager! You want to be there for those who are on your team, but you also don’t want them to just view you as a friend and be slack with their work. It’s important to strike a balance between being friendly and approachable and being a friend that'll let them get away with anything. You want them to know your door is always open for them to speak to with concerns but also when you set deadlines or work you need these to be adhered to.
Take care of yourself and your own mental health
Your own mental health can take a dive when you have a lot of responsibility. Make sure to take care of yourself and this will help to make you a better manager. If you suffer from anxiety (for example), look at natural remedies such as CBD or mindfulness that can help. Take time to relax, whether this is going for a walk or taking a bath. Head to the gym and take care of your own health both physical and mental and you are sure to see a difference in yourself.
These are just a few top tips that can help you to be a better manager at work. No matter how long you have been a manager for, whether it is a couple of days, a few weeks, or even months, it’s never too late to get better. What are some of your top tips for being a better manager at work? Let us know in the comments below, we would love to hear from you!
