How To Boost Your Career Confidence

COLLABORATIVE POST

A 2021 study revealed that only 4% of people feel fully confident at work. A lack of confidence can affect performance levels as well as career prospects. It’s not easy to build confidence, especially following rejection or a career break, but there are ways to improve self-esteem. In this guide, we’ll talk you through some effective strategies to help you boost your career confidence.

Set realistic goals

One of the most common reasons people lack confidence is setting unrealistic goals. Goal setting is an excellent way to increase motivation, but it’s crucial that you can hit your targets. If you’re starting out in a new career, it’s unlikely that you’ll be CEO within 12 months or that you’ll double your income in the first two years. There’s nothing wrong with having an end goal, but break objectives down into manageable goals. Set checkpoints along the way to your final destination and celebrate every time you reach a milestone.

Invest in yourself

It’s understandable to think about how other people can help you build confidence, but there are multiple steps you can take to boost self-esteem. Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people will be hugely beneficial, but you have to invest in yourself too. Take advantage of opportunities to learn and embrace ongoing training and development. Earning CPE credits is an excellent way to expand your skill set, build confidence and enhance your career prospects. Look for practical ways to work towards your goals. If you need additional qualifications to go for a promotion at work, for example, talk to your boss about training programs and courses.

Avoid making comparisons

It is human nature to make comparisons. We often rate our achievements or capabilities compared with other people. Making comparisons can be detrimental to mental health and it can sap confidence rapidly. Try to focus on your accomplishments and consider both your strengths and weaknesses. There may be areas where others excel and you fall short, but don’t let them overshadow your strengths. Build on the positives and be proactive in working on areas for improvement. Move at your own pace. There’s no rule that says you have to reach a certain salary bracket or land your dream job by a specific age. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

Align targets with personal objectives and values

It’s easy to get carried away with setting goals in a world where we’re encouraged to ‘shoot for the moon’ or ‘seize the day.’ While motivational quotes and mantras can be beneficial, it’s essential to root your goals in your personal objectives, beliefs and values. If a healthy work-life balance and job satisfaction are most important to you, don’t feel that you have to sacrifice these to earn more because other people aspire to be high earners, for example. Concentrate on your career dreams and have confidence in your plan.

A lack of confidence can impact performance levels and career progression. If you don’t have the confidence to apply for jobs, explore new opportunities or ask about promotions, now is the time to make changes. Build your confidence steadily by investing in yourself and setting clear, realistic goals. Base targets on your values and individual career goals and avoid making comparisons with other people.
