A lot of career advice points towards office jobs as if these are the only real options that offer job security and a decent wage. But a lot of workers are moving away from the office chair, laptop, and KPIs and are looking for alternative roles that still pay well but offer more freedom and flexibility than a 9-5 in an office delivers.
The answer to a well-paid job doesn't always lie within the confines of a cubicle; there are plenty of jobs that fly under the radar that not only pay well but offer job satisfaction, too.
Logistics covers a wide range of active careers and many of them offer solid pay because demand hasn't slowed - in fact, for many sectors, there's been massive growth and evolving roles and landscapes. Long-haul routes, regional delivery work, freight runs, and specialised transport all sit under the same umbrella. However, all have different schedules and rhythms, but with one common thread pulling them together — you're not anchored to a desk, you're working on the move.
Some people take on solo driving because they want a steady income and clear routes. Others prefer a mix of driving and warehouse duties with short local drives for a more varied day. Then there are the roles specifically for shared responsibilities, such as team truck driving jobs that sit naturally amongst other options and are geared towards covering more miles without stretching the workday.
And the best part is you're paid for miles, timing, and reliability, a straightforward system that can deliver an attractive pay packet.
There's been a massive shift in how trades are valued, especially due to the skills gap felt across many sectors under this umbrella. Jobs like electrical work, HVAC, plumbing, and diesel mechanics. They're not “fallback careers” anymore, as essential roles are experiencing lower trainee rates, which is pushing up wages, making them a more lucrative career.
But it's not just the pay that's exciting about these roles; there's the ability to earn a craft hands-on, on the job, all while benefiting from formal education too, so you gain the necessary qualifications and experience for a more fulfilling career. It's practical work that looks different for every role — be it working independently or in a small business or for a larger company in one place, and is perfect for those not wanting to sit behind a desk every day.
There's a whole category of careers that sits between “corporate” and “hands-on”. And for the most part, they can be massively overlooked.
Field inspectors, safety techs, utility workers, pipeline monitors, property surveyors — jobs where you're out in the world dealing with the real environment, not working under fluorescent lights.
And income is strong in this field because they rely on responsibility, not seniority, and if you're skilled and competent at what you do, you can progress in pretty much any role.
Many companies train internally, pay for certifications, and promote from the field up. It's definitely a viable option for those wanting a solid wage but without looking at the same four walls each day.
