In-House IT Letting you Down? Here's What To Do

Collaborative Post

If your in-house IT services are letting you down, you're not alone. It's something that afflicts many companies and has become increasingly common in more recent times as the complexity of in-house systems and threats from AI and cyber attacks have increased.

So, what are the practical steps you can use to fix your in-house IT and get better results? Here's what you should be doing:

Documenting your pain points

The first place you want to start is with documenting your pain points. You want to find out what's going wrong with your internal IT services and then look for solutions. Of course your pain points are going to differ significantly depending on the type of business you run. For example, if you're an enterprise server business, then you'll need to deal with pain points like finding the best server parts wholesale supplier in your industry. Meanwhile, if you're a small accounting firm, then your pain points are going to have to do with BYOD policies most likely.

Documenting and auditing your pain points helps because it eliminates the vagueness of your team's frustrations and highlights immediately what needs to be improved. The best way to audit is by categorizing problems with the impact that they have on your business. If you can quantify them to senior management, then you can justify costly interventions.

Implement a proper ticketing system

Your IT could also be letting you down if your support doesn't feel personalized. Therefore, make sure you formalize the support system that you offer your colleagues.

One of the best ways to do this is to use an existing piece of software like Freshdesk or Microsoft Teams that enables you to implement ticketing seamlessly. Once you have ticketing in place, it cuts down on problems that staff might have like not knowing who to ask if they have a problem with their computers or tracking performance properly. If you can automate repetitive fixes, that's even better. For example, getting a cloud service provider to deal with software updates eliminates the need to do it in-house.

Conduct a gap analysis

Another thing you'll want to do is conduct a gap analysis. The best option for this is to bring in external consultants to give your cloud operating systems a once-over. They could look at your backup and recovery status or how well you're performing in terms of cybersecurity.

The great thing about conducting a gap analysis with an external consultant is that they are able to pick up on blind spots that your internal team might miss. They can then provide you with a roadmap prioritizing which elements of your in-house IT you need to focus on. For example, you might need to add endpoint detection.

Improve your team's existing skills

The last thing you'll want to do is look for ways to improve or upskill your existing team. If you can get this right, then they're better able to deal with the complexities of modern in-house IT systems. The biggest training areas right now are AI, the cloud, and cyber security. Training on these enables you to upskill your existing teams without having to find replacements.
