If you feel as though your business isn’t as secure as it could be, or if you know that you need to make some changes to your business but at the same time, you’re not quite sure how or where to start, then this is the guide for you.
Educate your Staff
The first thing you need to do is take the time to educate your staff about the importance of cybersecurity. You may have the best and strongest firewalls around, and this is great, but at the same time, you do need to make sure that your staff is not unwillingly exposing your business and its sensitive data. Even though your staff may have the best intentions, they may be unaware of the tactics that hackers use, and they may also not be sure how to respond to dangerous situations. If your team wouldn’t know how to click a link in an email reset link, or if they wouldn't know how to distinguish a call from your IT team from an engineering attack, then these are all causes for concern. Employee training is so important here, as you need to tell your team about the things they should look for and what they can do to protect your business. If you can keep this in mind, you will find that you end up benefiting quite a lot.
Set Internal Controls
Another thing you need to do is try to set internal controls. You need to find new ways to try to protect against fraud as much as possible. Honest mistakes happen, and there’s nothing you can do about this sometimes, but with that said, taking the time to make sure that you are protecting your staff and by making sure that you're not overlooking internal systems is a good workaround. If you want to invest in more internal controls, then a good thing to do would be for you to look into things like access control. This is a great way for you to ensure that you’re not only making sure that your internal controls are as strong as possible, but it’s also a good way for you to prevent any unauthorized access, which is a good thing.
Keep Software Updated
If you are not keeping your software updated, then this is another major concern. No app or software is completely secure at launch, and over time, you may find that there are exploits and even loopholes that are found. If this is the case, the vendors will release patches for those issues. If you don’t update your software on a regular basis, however, then this will work against you as you will be putting your business at risk when you simply don’t need to. If a vendor stops supporting a product in its entirety, then this will create even more issues, as criminals will have more time to exploit the weaknesses in the software, and this is the last thing you need. If you can keep things like this in mind, it’ll help you a lot.
